Commercial Auto Insurance: Who Needs It and Why

The single most common claim denial we see for small business owners is this one: the contractor, realtor, photographer, or delivery driver caused or suffered an accident while working, and their personal auto carrier flat-out denied the claim because the vehicle was being used "in the course of business."

Here's everything you need to know about commercial auto in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

When You Need a Commercial Auto Policy

  • The vehicle is titled to a business (LLC, INC, etc.).
  • You deliver goods, food, or documents.
  • You haul tools, materials, or equipment to job sites.
  • You transport clients (rideshare needs its own endorsement).
  • You have lettering, wraps, or a logo on the vehicle.
  • The vehicle is over 10,000 lbs GVWR (most pickups + trailers combined).
  • You have employees driving the vehicle.

What Commercial Auto Covers

  • Liability — bodily injury & property damage you cause to others (most owners carry $1M Combined Single Limit).
  • Physical Damage — collision and comprehensive on the vehicle itself.
  • Medical Payments / PIP — for the driver and passengers.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist — protects you when the other driver has too little or no insurance.
  • Hired & Non-Owned Auto — extends protection to vehicles you rent or employees use for business.

Personal Auto vs. Commercial Auto — Side by Side

How Premium is Calculated

Commercial auto rating uses different factors than personal auto: vehicle class, radius of operation (local vs. long-haul), cargo type, driver experience, MVRs, and prior claims. A clean-MVR contractor running local in a 1500-series pickup might pay $1,800/year per vehicle. A delivery vehicle with a 20-year-old driver hauling intermodal cargo might pay $8,000+.

Ways to Keep Commercial Auto Premiums Down

  1. Higher deductibles on collision/comprehensive ($1,000+).
  2. Pull MVRs on every driver before adding them to the policy.
  3. Telematics — most major commercial carriers now offer 10–25% discounts for plug-in or app-based devices.
  4. Bundle with general liability and workers' comp through a Business Owners Policy (BOP).
  5. Garaging address matters — rural ZIPs price lower than dense urban.

Special Cases to Discuss with an Agent

  • DOT-regulated trucks — MCS-90, BMC-91, IFTA, IRP.
  • Tow trucks / wreckers — on-hook and garage liability.
  • Food trucks — commercial auto + property + general liability + spoilage all stack.
  • Rideshare drivers — need a personal auto policy WITH a rideshare endorsement, or a commercial policy for full coverage.
